On-The-Job Norfolk Auto Accident Claims 52-Year-Old Man’s Life

by | June 10th, 2013

June 10, 2013

An on-the-job Norfolk Auto Accident was responsible for claiming the life of a 52-year-old man last week. Reports indicate the accident happened at around 1:00 p.m. on the afternoon of Sunday, June 2, at a grocery distribution warehouse located on Kingwood Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia.

According to an article released by WAVY 10 News, the victim was an employee of the facility who was working near a loading dock on the day of the accident. When a vehicle hauling a trailer attempted to back up to the facility’s dock neither the driver or the worker recognized one another and the trailer of the vehicle struck the victim.

The victim was rushed to a local hospital, but died shortly after arrival. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The accident highlights the dangers vehicles in the workplace can present to employees. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that 41 percent of all workplace fatalities that occurred in 2011 were the result of transportation accidents.  And the transportation and warehousing industry alone that year saw a total of  733 employee deaths.

The Norfolk Personal Injury Lawyers with Lowell “The Hammer” Stanley are aware of the risks workers in numerous industries face daily when it comes to motor vehicle collisions. That is why the firm would like to send their deepest condolences to the family of the victim involved in this tragedy.

Sailors In Norfolk Receive Message About The Dangers Of Impaired Driving

by admin@gotechark.com | December 10th, 2012

December 10, 2012

Impaired driving is the leading cause of fatal motor vehicle accidents in the United States, yet is completely preventable. George Burch relayed that message to roughly 3,000 sailors at a program that was part of Naval Station Norfolk’s Safety Standown campaign.

According to the Suffolk News Herald, Burch is a retired sailor and police officer that currently works as a prosecutor in Suffolk County. Mothers Against Drunk Driving, who sponsored the event, thought Burch’s past experience could make him a voice of reason in the importance of staying off the road if impaired. He also explained how impairment isn’t necessarily just from alcohol either, as illicit drugs and some over-the-counter medications can also affect one’s ability to make good judgments behind the wheel.

Mr. Burch’s speech included anecdotes about the roughly 20 fatalities and more than 300 arrests he has been involved in that were the result of drunk driving and was quick to point out that such arrests potentially save thousands of lives each year.

Burch added that if one sailor remembers and abides to what he said, he has made a significant impact.

The Norfolk Personal Injury Lawyers with Lowell “The Hammer” Stanley understand the dangers of drinking and driving. That is why the firm’s team of Norfolk Car Accident Lawyers encourage citizens to establish a designated driver before attending an event where any alcohol is consumed.

Trial Begins for Norfolk Drunk Driver in Fatal Wreck

by admin@gotechark.com | October 26th, 2011

October 26, 2011

The trial began this week for a Norfolk, Virginia, man who got drunk and crashed his friend’s car in August 2010, killing three passengers.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that the 32-year-old man went to trial on Monday on three counts of aggravated involuntary manslaughter, for the deaths of an 18-year-old, 19-year-old, and 29-year-old. The crash, which occurred in the 1800 block of East Indian Road on August 11, 2010, also injured three people when the car ripped through a guardrail and into a group of trees.

Prosecutor Patricia O’Boyle told jurors on Monday that the driver reached speeds of up to 110 miles per hour as passengers yelled for him to slow down. His blood alcohol content level was later shown to be three times the legal limit.

In connection with the crash, the man also faces charges of driving while intoxicated, driving with a revoked license, purchasing alcohol for a minor, and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. These charges will be addressed in separate trials.

The driver’s defense attorney told jurors that a front-seat passenger jerked his wheel, causing the accident. O’Boyle said the car was so badly wrecked that rescue crews “could hardly tell it was a car.”

2 Injured When Driver Falls Asleep on Hampton Roads Interstate

A Capron, Virginia, man fell asleep at the wheel very early Thursday morning and wrecked his vehicle on Interstate 664 near Newport News, Virginia. Both he and a passenger suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash. It is not known whether or not they were wearing seatbelts.

The accident occurred around 3:30 a.m. near the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel when the sleepy driver drifted off the highway. He then awoke and over-corrected, jerking his 2001 Ford back onto the road. The Virginia State Police Department report that the man’s vehicle flipped several times.

The man and his passenger were both transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital via ambulance. Immediately following the accident, the southbound lanes of Interstate 664 were closed to enable the life-flight helicopter Nightingale to land, but the helicopter was later canceled. The northbound lanes were open again by 5 a.m. on Thursday.

The driver has been charged with reckless driving.

Alcohol is not said to be a factor in the crash.

Norfolk Man Acquitted from 2009 DUI Crash That Killed 2

by admin@gotechark.com | June 30th, 2011

June 30, 2011

On Tuesday a jury acquitted a 26-year-old Norfolk, Virginia, man who’d been accused of causing the 2009 drunk-driving crash that killed two people and caused serious brain injury to another.

The driver, who is an enlisted Navy sailor, stood trial for a week, and jurors took two days to reach a verdict—finding the man not guilty on two counts of aggravated involuntary manslaughter and a single count of maiming. A 22-year-old nurse and a 25-year-old Navy sailor both died in the crash, while a third passenger sustained permanent brain injury. A fourth passenger escaped with minor injuries.

The crash occurred on July 25, 2009, when the man’s BMW crashed into a tree off Granby Street and caught fire. He had been giving four strangers a ride home from Red Dog Saloon in Ghent. The man testified in court that, while driving, he’d been hit sharply in the jaw by an object or a person in the backseat and passed out. He testified that he didn’t remember the crash.

Though the driver’s blood alcohol content had been above the legal limit, a defense attorney argued that there was “reasonable doubt about what happened it that car.”
